Mom’s the word

My last blog was on April 14th. It has been 8 weeks and that is when it hit me. My regular journaling, reading and walking thankfully had kept me occupied. Part of the reason for not blogging was my travel schedule. From the last 8 weeks, there was a lot to share. I take solace in these words…

We saw how Delhi hit 52.9 degrees centigrade. For us as a family, we mourned the death of an important family member who left us unexpectedly. I had loving memories of her. There were times when I soaked myself in those memories of her and my mother in Rome and felt good that I was there for them. I was in the lift couple of days and I was on a team call. I saw our 6th-floor neighbour and after the initial expression of good morning, I was listening to the call. I had forgotten to press the button and thankfully she had done it for me. I realized how busy life has become in the last 8 weeks. So I decided to pause a bit and continue my blogging.

I was looking at the river of my life. As Walt Disney famously said, ” It all started with a mouse”. For us as a family, ” It all started with Vivid“. Vivid is the name of our house where I have spent my good time of my life. I guess it was Dad’s creativity at its best to put a different name to the house at a time when every other house had a traditional name. For the first time in 45 years, this year’s beginning it got flooded mildly and nobody was home at that time. This time around when we were at our place we checked some of the old photographs. Some of the photographs particularly the colour ones had faded thanks to the flood. But some of the black and white ones were saved and luckily did not have those watermarks ( literally). My daughters had the chance to see those old pictures and I could share some of the anecdotes and stories. I also stumbled into my grandfather’s diary which he had continuously written from 1971 till 2003. There was an interesting quote, ” The philosophy of one century is the common sense of the next”. Hidden in this quote were a lot of things my daughters were not aware of from those age-old days. It was heartening the other day when my younger daughter asked me, ” Are you saying your father studied without electricity”? I explained to her how my father and his brother whom he met while we were in our hometown studied and made a big difference to our lives. As Roland Warren said, ” Good fathers provide three things, they provide, they nurture and they guide“.

I wanted to break free from this fatigue of not writing and thanks to my mother whom I spoke on June 5th as we were remembering our Dad who passed away exactly 40 years back. She said, ” I know you are busy these days”. Every year for the last 6 years I guess I used to put out a small note about my father on June 5th. This time I missed June 5th but it is better to be late than never, after all, ” Mom is the word”
